  • 5 Beauty Breakthroughs for Summer

Summer beauty means keeping our skin extra safe, staying fresh and playing it cool with fun summer makeup. Here are the newest and best ways to kick off your summer season.

    1. Quick, at-home glow-getters

There’s no time for lengthy facial treatments when outdoor fun beckons. Speed up your skin care routine with quick and easy pre-moistened treatment pads—like an all-in-one mini facial!

Treat oily or breakout-prone skin to Sonage Go to Glow Glycopolymer Peel Pads, featuring dead skin-sweeping glycolic acid and lavender oil, a natural antibacterial that helps prevent pimples.

To brighten and improve skin texture, try Sanitas Skincare Brightening Peel Pads, which use three powerful exfoliators—glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids—to make skin radiant.

For fine lines or dullness, try emerginC Scientific Organics At-Home Facial Peel + Clarifying Kit, an easy two-step system. The first pad boosts cell turnover with lactic acid and sugar maple extract, and the second pad firms and plumps skin with apple extract and glycerin.

    1. Detoxing with charcoal

The very thought of charcoal conjures visions of summer barbecues…but did you know that pure activated charcoal is also a great skin detoxifier? When heat, humidity and layers of sunscreen clog your pores, the molecules in activated charcoal are a particularly great way to extract dirt and grime.

Look to Allafia Coconut Reishi Purifying Facial Cleanser for serious cleansing of oily summer skin with soothing coconut, nourishing reishi, coffee berry and charcoal. Follow it up with a lightweight moisturizer like Derma E Purifying Oil-Free Moisturizer, which absorbs quickly, detoxes skin with activated charcoal, moisturizes with pure aloe vera and is chock full of powerful antioxidants like green tea and seaweed.

    1. Sun protection simplified

Protecting our skin with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen (good for warding off both UVA and UVB sun rays) is one of the most important things we can do to keep our skin healthy (check out the American Cancer Society’s skin protection guide for more tips).

For easy, on-the-go coverage, try new brush-on sunscreens that are small enough to keep in your pocket for all-day protection. A few swipes of Colorescience Sunforgettable Brush-On Sunscreen on your face, shoulders, even your legs gives you SPF 50 protection; find it in 4 shades that blend perfectly with your skin tone (hint: go a shade darker for a healthy summer glow!). Or get protection from minerals like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in Mineral Fusion SPF30 Brush-On Sun Defense. Added antioxidants like white tea and sea kelp help repair sun damage while protecting you from the sun’s rays without harmful chemicals.

    1. Super-safe cosmetics

Pops of color and hydrating lip tints make summer beauty easy. And knowing that our favorite products have the new EWG Verified stamp from the Environmental Working Group gives us even greater peace of mind. For flirty, fluffy lashes try W3LL People Expressionist Mascara Pro in bright blue or purple. The EWG verifies that it’s made without artificial chemicals or petroleum derivatives, is paraben-free and doesn’t flake (so it’s perfect for sensitive eyes). Then protect, treat and show off pretty lips with Mineral Fusion Sheer Moisture Lip Tint that hydrates with cocoa butter and firms with peptides…also EWG verified!

    1. Natural deodorants that really work

There are so many effective new types on the market, including formulas that are particularly kind to easily irritated skin. Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant Sensitive Skin Formula, for example, relies on moisture-wicking arrowroot powder and bacteria-neutralizing coconut oil to banish odor without harmful aluminum or parabens. Skin-calming aloe and calendula, combined with moisture-absorbing arrowroot, make All Good Unscented Deodorant perfect for sensitive skin, even after shaving.

  • Fortify your hair health with these #ayurvedic tips!

Great hair is more than skin deep, even more than scalp deep. Within Ayurveda, it's actually gut deep. Many Ayurvedic suggestions and remedies for hair growth start with foods you should consume—and avoid!

Hair maladies are often attributable to an imbalance in pitta dosha, so when experiencing excessive hair fall or breakage, considering starting a pitta-balancing diet: avoid excessively sour, acidic, oily foods, choosing to favor blander varieties of vegetables such as zucchini and asparagus and sweeter fruits such as pomegranates and pineapples.

  • Ask Pharmaca: How Can I Keep My Skin Looking Younger Longer?

This is a great question—most of us don’t even think about aging skin until it’s upon us! But taking a preventive approach early on can help you retain a healthy, youthful glow for years to come. Healthy habits can certainly be a challenge when late nights and junk food are the norm—but it’s these things that can prematurely age your skin. So start by choosing a healthy lifestyle, then add a simple skin care routine to keep your skin looking young longer.

The healthy trifecta: Diet, exercise & sleep
Hippocrates famously said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” This simple yet profound statement teaches us that food really can serve as the foundation of our health.

The best thing for a healthy lifestyle is to learn to cook with quality, healthy ingredients that nourish the body with valuable nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Save money on take-out and pizza delivery by cooking simple, healthy meals at home. Invest in a few cookware essentials (aluminum free) and convenient food storage (like these from Lifefactory and U Konserve) to pack leftovers for lunch the next day.

  • How to Get Glowing Skin

If you could eat your way to younger looking skin would you do it? Can we tell you a secret? You can eat your way to younger looking skin! We can’t stress enough how important eating healthy foods are. They help with everything from preventing illness to improving digestion to, you guessed, it, improving your skin. We spend so much money on beauty products for our skin (not that they don’t work, because they do) but we should also spend our time focusing on eating the right things. Here’s a list of foods that will keep you looking young and give you that glowing skin you’ve always wanted.

Tomatoes – Tomatoes have lycopene which is what makes them red. Consuming tomatoes 3-5 times per week will protect your skin from UV rays and the damage they do. Lycopene also helps fight acne and reduces spots.

Kale – One of our favorite superfoods! It’s packed with anti-aging vitamins like A, C, E, and K. Vitamin K helps reduce the visibility of spider veins, stretch marks, bruising, and scars. Read all about why we love kale here

Berries  Berries are great for your skin because they boost collagen production which keeps your skin smooth and firm. People who consume strawberries on a regular basis are likelier to have less wrinkles. Berries also help prevent acne because of their high levels of antioxidants.

Fish & Seafood (particularly Salmon) – Fish like salmon are particularly high in Omega-3’s. Omega-3’s help to slow down the process of wrinkling. Doctors say you should consume fish at least 3 times per week to help reduce the signs of aging and acne.

Tumeric – We love us some tumeric (we added it to our new Advanced Cleanse)! It has great health benefits but also helps reduce dark spots and scars. We combine tumeric with coconut oil to make a great face mask, you should definitely try this at home!

Eggs – For those of you who don’t eat the whole egg, now you may want to. The yolk is rich in vitamins including Biotin which is great for protecting your skin against rashes, acne, and even dry spots. The yolks also have antioxidants that help against UV damage which can lead to skin cancer.

Walnuts – Like, fish, walnuts are high in Omega-3’s. Omega-3 oils keep your skin hydrated which prevents wrinkles and dry cracked skin during the cold months.

Oysters – Who knew oysters helped your skin? They have high amounts of the mineral zinc which helps your body make the proteins it needs to repaired damaged tissue. So if your skin is damaged from the sun, load on up on oysters!

Chocolate – Ahhh, it’s like music to our ears! Everyone time we want to indulge on a little piece, we’ll know we’re doing it for the greater good of our skin, right?! Chocolate actually contains an antioxidant called flavanol. Flavanols help protect your skin against UV rays and keep your skin texture soft.

Broccoli & Spinach – We love to load up our leafy greens! Turns out, leafy greens like broccoli and spinach are high in alpha lipoic acid. They help fight aging, redness and blotches on the skin, puffiness, under eye circles, and wrinkles! We’ll be loading up on these daily, who’s with us?!

  • Goat Milk For Your Skin

Cleopatra knew a thing or two about looking good, including the beautifying benefits of bathing in fresh, rich milk. Goat’s milk smoothes, hydrates, and nourishes the skin. It is easily absorbed into your skin’s many layers and with a PH similar to human skin it is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin – and an ideal moisturizer for damaged or dry skin. Lactic acid contained in milk helps to clean and soften the skin. In addition, goat’s milk naturally contains alpha-hydroxy acids which digest dead skin cells and help prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains essential proteins, amino acids, and vitamin A that nourish the skin along with natural beta hydroxy acids that condition and exfoliate the skin. Go ahead – give goat’s milk a try.
